Eskimo Kiss

A flock of birds flying away through the bright orange sky, the tired sun is now trying to hide itself behind those gigantic trees that seems so small from where I was. The city lights are starting to flicker like fireflies welcoming once again the night sky. Everything is in fast-paced motion but then I looked at the guy beside me, everything turns slow suddenly.

He was holding his third stick of cigarette in his left hand, gently swaying it between his thumb and his index finger. His right thumb rhythmically tapping against the pavement that we are sitting on while his head slightly dancing with every beat of Hockey's Song Away. With just one pair of earphone - one piece on his left one piece on my right - I can't help myself but to get carried away too.

He tucked his cigarette on his thin dark lips, messily fixed his dark brown hair and then looked at me. I looked back at him. He inhaled and then slowly exhaled the thick smoke. I bit my lower lip as I inhaled every bit of it.

He was watching me. I was watching him.

And then the beat changes, The Kooks is now on play. I smiled. He grinned back. He knew what I was thinking. We're both thinking the same thing.

I closed my eyes and quietly listen to Luke Pritchard's lovely rugged voice as he sings the Eskimo Kiss with its every word trying to bring me back to that one sunny day, that day I first met this man sitting beside me. Right now. I remember every details, I remember every bit of it.

Windy sunny day. Open field concert. Ocean of people singing and dancing to the live music. Everybody is enjoying the day, My friends said they'll take a rest for a little while and I said okay. They left me alone, they knew that I would not mind being alone at all. And I don't really care.

I don't really need a rest right now. The Kooks is on stage and I feel like dancing. And so I did. With excitement filling me in and warm sweat all over me, I closed my eyes and dance and listen and sing along to every beat and words like it will be last fucking time.

I was lost in the moment until I heard someone behind me recited my favorite line of the song...

"She's like a rose, without a thorn...
She's like a sunflower that never looks back in the sun."

I turned around and saw a beautiful man standing behind me. He was blushing against the sunlight and his hair was wet from his own sweat, I guessed. He continued reciting the chorus of the song, still looking at me.

"She's like the diamond in the rough...
She's like the first girl on this earth that you wanted to touch."

He was watching me with those light brown eyes that made me feel like he can actually see right through me. He licked his lower lip and then grinned at me.

I opened my eyes and found out that he was still watching me with that same look in his eyes that will forever make me feel the desire to read whatever it is in his mind. I watch him watch me.

And then he said, "I love watching you get lost in a song." He then touched the left corner of his lip with his left thumb and looked at me the way he looked at all those interesting work of arts displayed in a museum. I feel all my blood rushing into my cheek. "It feels like I'm capturing a magical moment in such an extraordinary time. Like you're inviting me to see through you," he continued.

Then he bit his lower lip, one of my favorite thing about him. "I hope you know how fascinating you are to me."

That left me hanging. I don't know what to say.

He then took out another stick of cigarette from his jean's pocket together with his little white lighter, tucked it again between his lip and grinned at me like he knew he caught me with his words. Again, as always.

The sky is now black with no stars on it. The song changed again and Houdini by Foster the People is now on play.

I looked at him and he looked back at me. And then he said, "I hope you know how much I love you."

I smiled at him and said, "I know. And I love you too."

He smiled widely and lit his fourth cigarette.
